“Steve Smith has been a knowledgeable, capable and highly effective leader of the House, since I became a member in 2020. As the Deputy Speaker, he has supported Speaker Packard throughout the challenging years of having sessions meeting offsite, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an incredibly tight partisan majority in the last term and the management of nearly nine hundred House bills with the logistical difficulty of hearings and committee staff over a mile from the State House, due to the renovating of the legislative office building. He has been invaluable in his guidance and advice on procedure in committee and the institution as a whole. No one can surpass him in terms of presiding over the House. Steve will make an excellent Speaker and I am proud to support him.”
